Work starts on fire-damaged pier
Southend Pier's charred timbers
Demoliton is starting on the badly damaged section of the pier
Work to restore Southend's famous pier, badly damaged by fire six months ago, gets under way on Tuesday.

While the damaged section is demolished, surveyors will assess its condition and provide a detailed report on the necessary work.

Because the landmark structure is listed, special consent was needed before the work could go ahead.

Despite the fire, the undamaged part of the pier has been open to visitors since the beginning of December 2005.

Marjory Hall, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's head of pier and foreshore, said: "It is absolutely wonderful news that vital demolition works can now begin, meaning that we are much closer to breathing new life into this much-loved attraction.

"Since the fire occurred at the end of last year, the council has pledged its commitment to seeing the town's icon reinstated as soon as possible."
