Coast under severe flood warning
Waves
Big waves have forced the closure of several beaches
Much of the south-west channel coast is under a severe flood warning as gale force winds raise sea levels and heavy rain and waves batter the region.

The alert is in force from Cornwall to Dorset with specific warnings targeting Weymouth and Christchurch Harbours up to the Stour and Avon rivers.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to use sand bags and floorboards to protect their property.

Ferry services in Cornwall were affected, and several beaches closed.

Coastguards have been warning onlookers to beware of large waves.

Conditions were "very dangerous," said a Falmouth coastguard spokesman.

Across the south, motorists have been contending with fallen trees and branches caused by the high winds.

The strong winds are set to ease in the region overnight as the storm passes towards Wales and Ireland.
