The Liberal Democrat leader for the Mid Devon district has beaten his Conservative counterpart for a seat on the council.

David Nation won the Lawrence ward with 761 votes, beating Tory Bill Nikon by 296 votes.

Queenie Broom, a first time candidate, beat the district chairman David Purgsley by 42 votes (275 to 233) winning the Collompton Outer Ward.

The Tories have the largest share of the council with 41% (17 seats).

The party gained five seats but do not have overall control.

The Lib Dems have 10 seats and Independents have 14. Labour did not field any candidates. The whole council was elected.
