Despite some disappointments in Devon, the Liberal Democrats have gained four more councillors in Teignbridge.

They now have a total of 21 members on the authority, four more than their previous total.

The Conservatives also made gains in Teignbridge and now have 19 members - up three from 16 - on the council.

The Independents lost seven seats, down to six from 13 previously. So the council remains with no one party in overall control.

'Chaos descended'

Teignbridge was the last council in Devon to declare its results.

A mistaken declaration at the count had to be corrected by having the results read out twice.

Francis Fulford, well-known for his appearance in a Channel 4 docu-soap, was incorrectly declared as the winner of the Teign Valley Ward so the results were read out again.

Mr Fulford said: "The returning officer said I was the duly elected winner even though I'd been beaten by 750 votes to 370 by Stephen Purser the independent candidate.

"So I put up my paw and said hang on you've got that wrong, everyone started to shout and then chaos descended."

Independent Stephen Purser was eventually named as the victor.
