Police alert on Devon rave sites
Muse
Teignmouth rockers Muse appear at Glastonbury on Sunday 27 June
Police have launched an operation to prevent a repeat of illegal raves taking place in Devon.

Two years ago about 1,000 revellers, who failed to get into the Glastonbury Festival, turned up at a disused airfield at Smeatharpe.

Last year the police managed to turn people away from the disused airfield - but it remains a potential magnet.

Devon and Cornwall Police have been liaising with other forces in the South West to try to prevent any repetition.

They say they have also identified other potential sites at risk in Devon and elsewhere.

Chief Inspector Nick Jarrold said: "People who attend these events are at risk as they lack even the most basic elements of safety.

"We have the powers to stop these illegal gatherings and to seize equipment, and will do so if necessary to protect the rights and lifestyles of the local community, as well as preventing serious injury and hazards to health of those attending."
