Council tax from second homes is being used to build more houses

The housing points system in the South Hams is being changed by the district council to try to make if fairer.

People with medical problems which are affected by their living conditions will go to the top of the list.

Residents with a local connection or who work in essential services such as health or education will also be given a higher rating.

Affordable homes

There are nearly 2,000 households on the waiting list but fewer than 220 rental properties become available each year.

South Hams District Council says that under the current system even families near the top of the list face a long wait for a permanent home.

The authority is hoping the new proposals will help those with the greatest need.
