Two Community Safety Wardens are to be taken on in a deprived area of Plymouth.
The two wardens will try to deal with anti-social behaviour in the Barne Barton area of the city, as well as parts of St Budeaux.
Their role is described as the eyes and ears of the community.
They will not have specific powers other than the power of persuasion, but they will try to reduce the fear of crime in their beat area.
They will talk to young people and address environmental issues.
The posts cost £75,000 a year, but it is hoped that similar wardens will be put in place in other parts of the city.
The appointments follow a successful bid for government funding by the Tamar Development Trust.
The introduction of the wardens follows a similar scheme in Teignbridge.
