The drugs were found in bags at a rocky outcrop in the estuary

Drugs with an estimated street value of £14m have been found in north Devon.

Police and customs officers discovered the bags of drugs, believed to be cocaine, in the River Torridge estuary on Monday night.

They were located in a rocky outcrop between Appledore and Bideford.

Police picked up the drugs from a spot close to the wrecks of two sailing vessels off Appledore Woods.

Joint investigation

The area where the bags were found is not accessible by a vehicle.

Anyone going there would have had to travel by boat, or walked along the estuary footpath.

Customs officers are appealing for anyone who may have seen any unusual activity in the Torridge estuary between Saturday and Tuesday to contact them.

A joint investigation is being carried out by law enforcement officers from Customs and Excise and Devon and Cornwall Police.
