Derby-based train maker Bombardier is being sued for millions of pounds following the derailment of a London Underground train in 2003.
The crash at Chancery Lane station involved a train built at the Bombardier site by then owners ABB.
London Underground said the proceedings related to the design and construction of Central Line trains.
They added that the derailment caused disruption to the Tube network and were now seeking up to £20m in compensation.
Long-term concerns
In March, the Health and Safety Executive confirmed it would not bring any charges against Bombardier in relation to the derailment.
Bombardier declined to comment on the case, but it is understood the company will contest the action at the High Court.
A London Underground spokesman said: "We have long been concerned about defects in the design of the 1992 stock of Central Line trains.
"We have started legal proceedings in the High Court against Bombardier, who are now responsible for the design and construction of those trains.
