Two schools in Derbys are hoping for multi-million pound transformations.
The county council is bidding for £6m from the government for Mill Hill School, Ripley, and plans to raise £1.5m itself.
It will be used to replace part of an ageing wooden-framed building, which currently holds several classrooms.
The council is also bidding for £2.3m to convert the split-site Immaculate Conception Catholic Primary School in Spinkhill into a single site.
Acting chief education officer David Shaw said: "It is easier for pupils to achieve their full potential if they are working in well-designed, efficient and modern buildings."
