More than 1,500 incidents were reported in the Amber Valley area last year.

The new officer Jacki Gray, who already has two years experience working for victim support, felt it was vital to have this facility available.

She pointed out that many people are reluctant to go to the police and need another practical option before they will seek help.

No support

On average, a person is assaulted 35 times by their partner before they complain.

Ms Gray said: "Rather than going straight to the police... they can contact me and we can take a lower profile approach.

"Many victims are unsure what they want to do straight away and it takes time for them to decide. We will support them and help them do the right thing."

She added: "In the Amber Valley there are a lot of places where domestic abuse is quite rife.
