The building in Tamworth Road, Long Eaton, Derbyshire, will be completely refurbished with a new roof and floors.

It will be rewired, a new heating system fitted, new carpets laid and the whole facility will be redecorated.

English Heritage and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister have approved the plans for the building, which dates back to the early 20th century.

Brighter future

A wooden extension at the back of the building, which houses the children's library and a staff room, will also be demolished and replaced.

The library will close when work starts on 28 August and will re-open in the spring of 2005.

The county council is currently looking for a town centre site to locate a mobile library for the duration of the closure to ensure people have access to library services.
