Recycling projects in Derbyshire have been given a £2.5m grant from the government.
The money is expected to be chiefly spent on persuading people to separate their rubbish, and on providing kitchen waste composting facilities.
County Council environment officer Steve Pearson said he hoped the money would help cut down on levels of waste going to landfill in the county.
The successful bid for funding to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) was made last month.
It was made in partnership with four district waste collection authorities - Chesterfield Borough, High Peak Borough, North East Derbyshire District and Bolsover District Councils.
