Hundreds of fish have already died

Hundreds of fish have already died, after farm effluent leaked into the River Ive near Carlisle.

The effluent - a mixture of silage and slurry waste - has affected 6km of the River Ive at Ivegill.

It is believed to be coming from a farm, and the Environment Agency said it will hold a full investigation into the incident.

The liquid waste strips oxygen from the water, and the fish are suffocated.

The Agency is trying to save as many fish as possible, by pumping oxygen into the river, and pumping water onto the river bank.

This allows the water to drain back into the river, with higher levels of oxygen.

The Agency has thanked the two members of the public, who used a free emergency hotline to report the incident.
