The rat: a "formidable" opponent
|
A community of rats which was threatening wildlife on one of the Isles of Scilly has been eradicated.
It is thought the creatures had spread to Annet, which is uninhabited, from a neighbouring island.
Conservationists feared several species of seabirds nesting at ground level would have been at risk.
David Mawer, from the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, says checks on the rat population will continue to try and ensure they do not return.
He said: "We can't underestimate the intelligence of the rat and the versatility of them. They are a formidable opponent.
