The Eden Project is awaiting a £37m funding decision

Restormel councillors have voted in favour of the schemes which are said to be worth £200m to the local economy.

The £95m proposal for Eden includes a third greenhouse, or biome.

Both applicants have to agree planning and legal conditions.

Eden's assistant project director, George Elworthy, said: "We can now press on with our design development as rapidly as we can."

Eden is awaiting news on a £37m application from the Millennium Commission.

Mr Elworthy said: "We have to work them in parallel, so we will press on as fast we can and get further designs to the planners to make sure they all get approval."

Beach fears

Councillors were told that the 500 apartments at Carlyon Bay would be for holiday use only.

Concerns were raised about traffic congestion and the threat of flooding.

Carlyon Bay resident Mark Fraser, said: "We are particularly concerned by the whole concept of building a large-scale project on a beach.

"In doing so, Cornwall is destroying its most valuable asset, its scenery."

But councillors voted for the scheme, providing agreement was reached on planning and legal issues.

Developer Jonny Sandelson hopes to start demolishing the Coliseum entertainment complex to make way for the apartments in September.
