Cornwall Coliseum would be demolished as part of the plans

Restormel Borough Councillors are being advised by their planning officers to back a scheme for 500 houses and flats at Carlyon Bay near St Austell.

But the development company behind the scheme, Ampersand, will be told that the properties can be used only for holidays.

The development includes leisure facilities and improvements to the Coliseum entertainment complex.

Conditions imposed

It has prompted protests from people living nearby.

They claim that local roads would become heavily congested if 500 homes are built on the site.

But Ampersand says it would create hundreds of jobs.

Restormel planning officers say the project should be backed but they want a series of conditions to be imposed.

They include a ruling that the properties must be used only as holiday homes, planners say permanent residential use would be unsuitable.

It is hoped work will start on the site later in the year if approval is obtained.
