Street drinking ban curbing yobs
The threat of £500 fines for people caught drinking on some streets of a Cambridgeshire town is curbing crime.

After just a few weeks, the official line is the ban in March town centre is doing the trick.

Police hope keeping West End Park, City Broad, Broad Street and Nene Parade alcohol-free will rid March of drink-fuelled violence.

The town council says it is not being a killjoy but it wants people to enjoy the town without feeling intimidated.

Police say that with the alcohol ban people are being more cautious and conscientious about alcohol consumption and youngsters have stopped hanging about on street .

The ban is being backed up with a dispersal order - which gives police the power to move on gangs who could be intimidating.
