Rabbits munch competition blooms
Rabbit generic
Wisbech had threatened to send the rabbits to a rival Suffolk town
A town's chances of a success in this year's Britain in Bloom contest are being eaten away by a rabbit invasion.

Bunnies have taken up residence on two roundabouts in the centre of Wisbech, Cambs, and are eating their way through the town's floral displays.

The Wisbech in Bloom team is concerned the rabbits will scupper its chances of beating arch rivals Bury St Edmunds.

Last year the Suffolk town won a trophy for the best large town while Wisbech was awarded a certificate of merit.

Wisbech's bloom problem is also being hampered by the rabbits "celebrity status".

Lucky rabbits

Penny Stocks, of Wisbech in Bloom, said: "The rabbits are chomping all the leaves and flowers.

"Then people see them, think they haven't got much to eat and throw lettuces and carrots on to the roundabouts, making them look even worse."

She added: "At first I did say it would be really nice if they were sent off to Bury St Edmunds, which is our main competitor, but I have had a re-think.

"Rabbits are supposed to be lucky and by the time the judges come at the end of July we could have hundreds of rabbits.

"All that luck in their feet could be just what we need."
