The Bristol centre could be open in spring 2006

It plans to expand its distribution centre at Newark, Lincs, and build a new facility on the edge of Bristol.

However, its centre at Stevenage, Herts, will be among those to close in a £30m two-year cost-cutting drive and it is not clear how many jobs will go.

A planning application for the 630,000 sq ft Bristol site has been submitted, with opening planned for April 2006.

Profits fall

A Dixons spokeswoman told BBC News: "Up until now we have had two national hubs in Newark and Stevenage, and 17 local distribution centres.

"Newark and Bristol will feed out to 12 outbases across the country to create a more efficient system and cut costs."

The group has just reported an 8% fall in annual profits, and said the outlook for the current year remains "challenging".

The owner of Dixons, Currys and PC World in the UK said its full-year pre-tax profits were £336.8m ($612.6m).
