New community support officers are to work directly with Hertfordshire schools to provide truancy patrols and a high-visibility security presence.
The officers will also provide parents and carers with information about ways to help young people avoid crimes.
Project manager Linda Wharmby said: "More direct contact with young people is needed to cut crime and truancy."
The six new school officers will be at Hertford, Cheshunt, Hitchin, Stevenage, Hemel Hempstead and St Albans.
They are funded by Hertfordshire Police and will also help gather evidence which could be used when issuing anti-social behaviour orders.
