More stations are now included in the penalty fare zone

The move is part of a fresh campaign against fare evasion by rail operators across London and the South East.

Posters will be displayed at stations across Kent and Sussex now included in the penalty fare scheme which operates by issuing fines to ticket cheats.

A spokesman said: "Few of us want to pay more for our tickets because some people avoid paying."

Fare dodging

He said: "The loss of income due to people travelling without tickets reduces the money available to invest in better rail services."

Last year, rail officials said the existing £10 penalty charge was too low, and should be doubled.

It was estimated that rail operators across the country were losing an estimated £200m in revenue each year because of fare dodging.

The Rail Passengers Council (RPC) said plans to raise penalties would benefit fare-paying passengers.
