More CCTV cameras are planned for Metro trains

The move follows research by operator Nexus, showing that many people are afraid to use public transport - especially at night.

Nexus is introducing more CCTV cameras, more patrols and a special mobile phone text number to report crimes.

The organisations says it plans to spend £90,000 alone on more security cameras for trains and platforms.

Mike Parker, Nexus director general said: "People's perceptions of public transport, especially at night, are not good.

"It's worth pointing out that incidents of serious crime on public transport are rare and what we deal with is criminal damage, graffiti and low level anti social behaviour.

Nexus plans to introduce targets to measure the success of the new anti-crime measures.
