The Cotswold Canals are being examined by archaeologists for the first time, ahead of a multi-million pound restoration project.
Experts from Cotswold Archaeology will spend ten weeks looking at the waterways, including the Sapperton Tunnel and the Cotswold roundhouses.
The plan is to conduct the first ever heritage survey of all 36 miles of the abandoned line.
The report will then guide the £82m restoration planned to link the River Severn with the River Thames.
Richard Morriss of Cotswold Archaeology told the BBC: "We will be walking the entire line over the next few weeks, so people living nearby may see us examining features along and close to the towpath."
The £50,000 survey is being part funded by English Heritage.
