York 'needs to enhance nightlife'
York
The report looked at issues facing the city
York needs to tackle issues of social exclusion and have a better nightlife, a new report reveals.

The findings from the Joseph Rowntreee Foundation outline a vision of how the city could develop.

The report says that when York is compared to other British historical cities, it comes out a "good average", and is in good economic health.

It adds that the university and the Science City initiative have helped to replace the loss of manufacturing jobs.

But the report has concerns about potential social divisions and says the city could go further to achieve excellence in environmental challenges.

It also says the city needs to support a "richer cultural offering, particularly nightlife."

According to the findings, York has to tackle issues of traffic congestion and pollution, a lack of affordable housing and a widening gap between social classes.

The report was commissioned on behalf of Without Walls - York's Local Strategic Partnership, an organisation set up by the council to consider the city's future.
