About 42,000 vehicles use the road every day
A special telephone line has been set up to keep people in Cumbria up to date with the M6 extension.

Work is expected to start soon to upgrade the Cumberland Gap.

The M6 extension between Carlisle and Guards Mill will cost £65 million.

A special help line number - 0845 160 3178 - has been set up so that people can find out how the scheme is progressing and how it might affect them.

The work will be carried out by Carillion Construction and is currently at the preliminary design phase.

The nine kilometre section of the A74 is being upgraded because of its poor accident record and heavy usage.

About 42,000 vehicles - 10,000 of them heavy goods vehicles - use the road every day.
