Bob Ahmed bought the house for £45,000

Businessman Bob Ahmed paid £45,000 for the terraced house in Seymour Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.

Sir Stanley, who played 54 times for England, was born at the house on 1 February, 1915.

Mr Ahmed is appealing to the football authorities to pay him to establish a museum.

Fitting tribute

He told the BBC's Midlands Today programme: "What a privilege it is to be in a position like this.

"Walking into a legend's house and having a kick about, it's brilliant."

The house cost less than some Premiership players are paid every week and Mr Ahmed hopes to establish a fitting tribute to one of Stoke-on-Trent's most famous sons.

Sir Stanley first honed his footballing skills in the back yard of 89 Seymour Street by kicking a ball against the walls for hours.

He went on to become one of the most famous footballers of his generation, in a career that spanned 33 years.

In 1964, he became the first player to be knighted. Sir Stanley died in 2000.
