Five fire crews were called to tackle a major fire in Plymouth's historic Barbican area on Monday afternoon.
One firefighter, who was suffering from heat stress, had to be rescued from the Ship pub.
The fire started at about 1600 GMT in the kitchen of the pub and it took firefighters two hours to bring the flames under control.
No-one inside the building was injured and it will not have to be demolished.
Damping down
"Humidity levels were very high and visibility was zero inside the building because of the heavy smoke, so it was difficult and stressful," said station officer Colin Rockey, who was in charge of the operation.
"It's a very difficult building with complicated room layouts," he said.
