Shropshire County Council is trying to raise enough cash to transform Treflach quarry near Oswestry.

After years of illegal fly tipping at the quarry, studies have found evidence that parts of the site are contaminated.

The old limestone workings have not been used for at least 60 years but until the late 1980s, the quarry was used as a landfill site for road sweepings, gully emptying and building waste.

The quarry is in a picturesque location near the Offa's Dyke footpath.

Council officials say it has great potential as a public open space and are asking the regional development agency Advantage West Midlands for nearly £500,000 to pay for the clean up.
