The Brewery Tap, stood next to the former Vaux Brewery, and had been the site of a pub since 1842.

It was one of the oldest surviving pubs in Sunderland, but was under threat as soon as the Vaux Brewery closed over three years ago with the loss of 750 jobs.

The demolition on Thursday came despite a campaign to save the landmark building by giving it listed status.

The traditional pub was loved by its regulars, and a favourite watering hole for Sunderland football supporters on matchdays.

"The Tap" was famed for its polished, narrow-boarded wooden floor, its back snug and a large blackboard in the gents which invited comments to keep the walls free of graffiti.
