GP surgery given to asylum seekers
Sai Medical Centre
Centre will serve only asylum seekers
A doctor's surgery which closed down because no doctor was willing to run it, is to re-open to serve asylum seekers.

The announcement came after claims were first made in a national newspaper in September.

The change means 1,700 patients at the Sai Surgery in Rose Hill in Derby, have to register with already busy practices a few miles away.

The practice will re-open as a specialist treatment centre for asylum seekers from all over the city,

Replacement GP

The move comes despite assurances by health officials in 2002 that this would not happen.

Graham English of Central Derby Primary Care Trust, said when interviewed in 2002.

"This is certainly not the case. We are currently looking for a replacement GP for the GP who has withdrawn his services from the patients."

The Trust says the decision will help deal with the specific needs of asylum seekers, and at the same time relieve pressure from GP's currently treating them.

Graham English, chief executive for Central Derby Primary Care Trust announced the changes.

He said: "This service is designed to meet the full health needs of patients from newly emerging communities, some of whom have suffered greatly in their lives, and will help support them in their transition into the wider community."

Patients at the Rose Hill surgery have already been allocated to alternative nearby practices.
