The girls were shot outside a party in Aston
Police investigating the murder of two girls shot dead outside a party in Birmingham have arrested the brother of one of the victims.

Charlene Ellis, 18, and Letisha Shakespeare, 17 were shot in Aston on New Year's Day.

Charlene's brother Marcus Ellis was arrested on Monday.

The girls, all from Birmingham, had stepped out of the party at the Uniseven Studios hairdressing salon in Birchfield Road, Aston, at about 0400 GMT to cool off, when they were shot.

Helpful calls

Charlene's twin sister Sophie and 17-year-old Cheryl Shaw were also injured in the incident - all four girls were cousins.

A West Midlands police spokesman said a man aged in his early 20s was arrested on Monday afternoon.

"The man was interviewed on Monday night and was held in custody," he said.

He said the man was due to be questioned again on Tuesday.

Detective Superintendent Dave Mirfield said they had received a number of anonymous but helpful calls from the public about the incident.

There had been concerns about witnesses being reluctant to come forward out of fear of reprisals, but Mr Mirfield said the response had been better than in previous cases.
