Post offices 'important' says mayor
Tony Egginton
The mayor opposes the closure plan
The mayor of Mansfield has stepped into the row over facilities in the town.

Tony Egginton has pledged his support to a campaign to stop the proposed closure of two Post Offices.

Mr Egginton, who was elected as an independent mayor in October, said it was important the two branches in the Berry Hill area stayed open.

But managers say that closing the post offices on Berry Hill Lane and Upper Nottingham Road would improve the long-term prospects of other branches.

'Valuable service'

It is part of a national restructuring programme aimed to help the struggling Post Office back into profit.

Local district councillor Kate Allsop has already said she will campaign to keep the branches open.

Now the mayor, a former newsagent, has offered his support.

Mr Egginton said: "These post offices are an important part of the community and they provide a valuable service to many people.

"Again it seems to be the thin end of the wedge with the public losing out."
