School to learn fate on Friday
Lowick School
Lowick School was founded in 1856
Supporters of a Cumbrian school, threatened with closure, will know on Friday if they have been successful in their bid to stop the process.

The High Court in London has been hearing an application for judicial review of the decision, lodged on behalf of the 21 pupils who attend Lowick Primary School near Ulverston.

Some evidence from Cumbria County Council is still to be heard by the court on Thursday, and the judge will announce his decision on Friday.

The court has heard claims the county council failed to consult everyone involved with the school, and that it still has not made clear what will happen to the pupils.

'Good education'

Cumbria County Council said the decision was taken because of surplus places and falling numbers.

But headteacher Shirley Rainbow told BBC Radio Cumbria she believed the school was financially viable.

"We hope we will be granted permission to have a judicial review then the whole process will be halted.

"Our school is very successful and the education we provide is very good," she said.

The school was praised in a recent Ofsted report which highlighted its consistently good teaching.

Commenting on the court action, Joan Stocker, from Cumbria County Council, said: "We welcome the hearing in some ways as we don't want to have been seen as unfair in the process we have gone through."
