Transport bosses back trams plan
Trams could be back on the streets of Reading
Civic chiefs have backed a major transport overhaul that could see trams once again rolling onto the streets of a Berkshire town.
The plans backed by Reading Borough Council members on Monday night also include a third bridge over the River Thames. The council is also considering converting Reading's vital inner ringroad - the Inner Distribution Road, known as the IDR - into a one-way system. The proposals are now being put out for public consultation. Trams supported Improvements to buses, trains and the area's road network are all considered in the proposals. It is hoped the changes will improve access into and out of the congested town centre, particularly by increasing the range of public transport options. Neighbouring councils have already voiced their support for the idea of trams and a light rail transport system supporting existing buses and trains.
