Death crash police cleared
Merseyside Police HQ
The officers have been subject to two investigations
Five police officers suspended following the deaths of two teenagers in one of the Mersey tunnels will not face criminal charges.

Darren Franey and Scott Veach, both 14, died when the stolen Vauxhall Vectra they were driving crashed at the Liverpool exit of the Kingsway Tunnel.

They had been travelling at speeds of up to 100 mph and hit a road block set up by police at the end of the tunnel.

The officers remain suspended as Merseytravel, which has jurisdiction over tunnel police, continues its investigation.

The Police Complaints Authority said the results of its separate investigation - which has now been completed - would be made public at the coroner's hearing.

Solicitor Chris Topping - who represents the Franey family - said they were disappointed with the decision.

"They had hoped there would be criminal proceedings," he said.

"They believe the decision to block the tunnel was unreasonable and it was foreseeable that it would cause serious injury or death."
