The pavilions were almost derelict when the work started and have been reconstructed as closely to the 1836 originals as possible.

Most of the funding came from a lottery grant but 25% had to be raised by the Friends of the Botanical Gardens Trust.

It has taken five years to carry out the project.

'Glorious time'

Botanical Gardens curator Joe Rowntreee told BBC News Online: "There has been lots of painstaking, and tremendous restoration work."

"The view we have now has not been seen for over 100 years.

"It is a glorious time for everyone invloved in the project."

Over the next few months plants from all over the world will be collected for the pavilions which will be open to the public by next summer.
