Preserving a national jewel
Millions of pounds needs to be spent to ensure that Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire - the ancestral home of Lord Byron - remains a top visitor attraction in the UK.
The west front of the abbey is all that remains of the priory church, first built in the 13th century
The formal gardens include a rose garden, a Japanese garden and a rock garden
Canada geese stay on the abbey grounds all year round
The Rose Garden is part of the 333-acre park that surrounds the abbey
Some columns near the Garden Lake are badly in need of repair
