Wobbly headstones' threat
gravestones
Leaning gravestones can pose a hazard to visitors
Specialist lifting equipment is being used to move headstones which are in danger of falling on visitors to Derbyshire cemeteries.

For health and safety reasons, council officials have to check the headstones to make sure none of them are wobbly.

Any of the stones that are hazardous enough to pose a risk to visitors are going to be dismantled or laid flat on the ground.

Derby City Council officials have been trying to contact relatives of those buried in the graves, but with little success.

Relatives' responsibility

A council spokesman said any headstones more than 100 years old are considered the council's responsibility.

Those less than a century old must be maintained by relatives.

But so far the county has only been able to contact a few relatives to ask them to ensure their gravestones are safe.
