Christine Norman, 62 and from Whitehaven, was killed and five other people seriously injured after being hit by a car while walking near Shap.

She died at 1500 BST on Sunday following an accident involving two cars heading towards Hackthorpe on the A6.

One of the cars veered off the road, and hit a group of walkers from the Whitehaven Ramblers Club.

Five other members of the group were taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle in what police describe as "a serious condition".

The accident happened at Shap Beck Gate, at its junction with the C3052.

A blue Honda Civic and a gold Ford Escort were heading out of Shap towards Hackthorpe, when a collision occurred between the two vehicles.

The Escort left the road and collided with a party of pedestrians from the Whitehaven Ramblers Club.

The survivors were taken to hospital by ambulance and air ambulance.

Police say the road was closed for several hours, and are appealing for witnesses.
