The town's first alcohol-free zone is being introduced outside the Broughton Avenue shops in Easterside.

Signs have been put up to warn people not to drink there.

It is hoped the measure will cut down on anti-social behaviour, and has been backed by the council, residents, and community representatives.

Similar bans have been imposed in areas of Stockton, but this is the first one for Middlesbrough.

The area affected is between Broughton Avenue, Broadwell Road and a series of shops.

The area includes the local library, church, and a children's play area.

Residents say they feel intimidated by young drinkers who gather in the area.

Ban popular

Easterside councillor Dave Budd said: "You can get five or six youngsters, usually under the age of 18, going around drinking.

"They are not causing any trouble, but the feeling is that they intimidate people going to the shops."

He said the ban would be very popular with people living in the area.

People are only liable to arrest, and a possible fine, if they refuse to dispose of their drink after being told to do so by a police officer.
