For sale: Ruined castle
Clifford Castle
Clifford Castle is a scheduled ancient monument
Househunters in Herefordshire are being offered the chance to buy a property as rich in history as it is poor in mod cons.

Clifford Castle, ruined since being attacked by Owain Glyndwr in 1402, is in the grounds of a 1920s house now on the market for £425,000.

The castle is famed as the birthplace of Jane Clifford - the mistress of 12th Century King Henry II immortalised as Fair Rosamund by the poet Tennyson.

Estate agent Ryan Williams said: "There's a huge romantic appeal to the place."

Clifford Castle stands near the village of Clifford, near Hay-on-Wye.

A motte-and-bailey castle was first built on the site in about 1080 as part of Norman fortifications along the Welsh border.

The stonework is thought to date from the 13th Century.

However, it was never rebuilt after being attacked by the forces of Welsh rebel leader Owain Glyndwr.

Nowadays, the castle is a scheduled ancient monument, meaning it is protected from developers.

The asking price includes a mock Tudor four-bedroomed house, nine acres of pastureland and 450 yards of access to the River Wye.

Mr Williams, of estate agents McCartney's, said: "It would be up to the new owners whether or not they allowed people to view the castle.

"Maybe they will want to refortify it and keep the Welsh out again."
