Disgraced Archer to appeal
Lord and Lady Archer
Jailed peer Jeffery Archer and his wife Mary
Disgraced peer and former Tory MP Jeffrey Archer is appealing against both his sentence and conviction for perjury and perverting the course of justice.

The millionaire novelist and Cambridgeshire peer was jailed for four years at the Old Bailey in July 2001.

After a six-week trial he was found guilty of for two counts of perjury and two of perverting the course of justice.

The prosecution had alleged he lied during a 1987 libel trial against the Daily Star, at the end of which he was awarded £500,000 in damages.

Archer had been accused by the newspaper of sleeping with prostitute Monica Coghlan, who had been "willing to engage in perverted sexual practices".

It is not yet known what his grounds of appeal will be at the Royal Courts of Justice on 22 July.

As at the Old Bailey trial, Archer will be represented by top QC Nicholas Purnell.

At he day-long hearing Archer will be renewing an application to appeal against his conviction as well as challenging his sentence.

Party chairman

It will be heard by Lord Justice Rose, Mr Justice Colman and Mr Justice Stanley Burnton.

Archer, who was created Lord Archer of Weston-Super-Mare in 1992, was Conservative MP for Louth, Lincolnshire, between 1969 and 1974 and eventually rose to become chairman of the party.

When he was jailed, the now 62-year-old peer, who grew up in Somerset, was living with his wife Mary in Grantchester, near Cambridge.

He will be able to retake his seat in the House of Lords upon his release, whether or not cleared by the Court of Appeal .
