Max Palmer got into difficulty after jumping into a plunge pool in a mountain stream.

His mother Patricia tried desperately to save him and was swept downstream with him by the strong current.

Both had to be pulled out of the water by a mountain rescue team but it was too late to save Max.

Police have started interviewing the 14 older children who were at the pool on Sunday morning.

Max, a "model" pupil at Shakespeare Primary School in Fleetwood, had joined the trip to be with his mother who is an educational support assistant at Fleetwood High School.

Cumbria Police said he had joined the older children in jumping into the pool near Glenridding on the banks of Ullswater.

Somehow, the 10-year-old got into difficulty and was swept downstream.

His mother risked her life trying to save him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Most of the children the police are interviewing are year eight pupils.

Counselling services have been offered to students and staff at the two schools, Lancashire County Council said.

One of the teenagers was airlifted to hospital with a graze.

Police are trying to establish what made a relatively shallow stream suddenly so dangerous.

It had been raining and outdoor pursuits experts said that even a small amount of rain falling on already sodden ground could have caused large amounts of water to gush into the stream.
