Police investigating violent clashes between football fans after the Division One play-off final are close to more arrests.

People allegedly involved in the riot which followed the Millwall-Birmingham game have been identified from photographs released to the public.

Seventeen men have so far been arrested since the match on 2 May, said a spokesman for Scotland Yard.

A senior officer said many of the officers who were injured had been "cheered" by the strength of the response after public appeals for information.

It demonstrates that the public shares our disgust

Det Chief Insp Peter Newman
Some of the worst football violence seen in the UK broke out near Millwall's ground in south London after they conceded a goal in the closing minutes.

More than 100 officers and a number of police horses were injured in the riot.

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Newman, who is leading the inquiry, said the public response had cheered officers who were injured.

"It demonstrates that the public shares our disgust at the appalling acts of violence carried out against officers and the sheer wanton vandalism to property and vehicles in the area.

"This is not what real football fans want to see," he said.

Mr Newman said examination of CCTV footage was continuing and more pictures would be enhanced and then released.
