Man dies after hit and run crash
Northumbria Police headquarters
The occupants of the car fled after the crash
A pensioner has died and a woman has been injured in a crash at a bus stop on Tyneside.

Police say a car lost control and mounted the pavement. The occupants fled after the crash.

James Mulligan, 73, received fatal injuries.

An 84-year-old woman who was waiting at the bus stop in Albion Street, Gateshead, was also hurt.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the incident at 1240 BST on May 1 to come forward.

'Fled scene'

A spopkesman for Northumbria Police said: "The car... hit a concrete post at the stop before hitting the two pedestrians.

"The occupants fled the scene and Mr Mulligan later died of his injuries.

"The woman received minor injuries.

"Two men were subsequently arrested in connection with the incident and we are appealing for any witnesses to come forward."
