Children raise road fears
Children have to cross a busy road to reach the school
Children from a Nottinghamshire primary school are so worried about their safety on a busy road they have written to their council asking for help.
Pupils from Seely Junior School in Sherwood have been without a crossing patrol for two months. Every time they walk to school, they have to cross a busy road but since their last crossing patrol left, they have had no-one to help them across the road. Despite a widespread advertising campaign, the post has remained vacant.
One pupil told the BBC's East Midlands Today programme: "The cars don't stop, they don't see you. "The lollipop lady will make them stop for us." A parent added: "I think it's just an accident waiting to happen and I am really concerned. "We want our children to walk to school but we want them to get here safely." On Thursday, the school was given a temporary helping hand when a crossing patrol from another school lent its services. Crossing patrol warden, Alison Pinkett, said: "We are trying to promote traffic patrol wardens because at the moment, we are very short of staff and this school desperately needs one. "Our role is 100% important to get children across a busy road." Although the crossing patrol was only at the school for one morning, it is hoped that someone will come forward soon to make it a permanent sight.
