Tsunami donors 'to adopt islands'
Damage in Male in January
Parts of the Maldives suffered severe damage by the tsunami
Private donors are being invited to "adopt an island" under a UN programme launched in the tsunami-hit Maldives.

Donations would be used to buy essential building materials and employ workers in house rebuilding schemes.

UN spokesman Moez Doraid said outside assistance was needed if the aim of rebuilding one-third of the country's inhabited islands was to be met.

The biggest "adoption" would cost $4.4m (£2.4m) and help more than 1,000 people rebuild their homes, the UN said.

The cheapest, requiring $95,000, would help 58 families on another island.
