At the other end of the scale are workers in the City of London, who earn the highest wages.

The New Earnings Survey from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) highlights the wealth divide between different parts of the UK.

The survey also showed that the place where you live can determine how long you work each week.

Surprisingly, those working in the City emerged as having the shortest working week at just 37 hours.

However, the ONS said this was probably due to the fact that the survey measured paid hours rather than actual hours worked.

Therefore any unpaid overtime in the City was not counted for the purposes of the survey.

People living in Selby, north Yorkshire, worked the longest week of 44.9 hours, compared with a national average of 40.9 hours

And in some areas of the country the working week was on average nearly 10% longer than the UK norm.

Wealth gap

The average weekly wage in the City of London is £971.60, with one in 10 City workers earning more than £1,668 a week.

People in mid Devon, however, are paid two-thirds less than their City counterparts, with salaries averaging just £332.20 a week.

Meanwhile, men in North Cornwall earn an average of just £313.70 per week.

The area has been hit hard by the closure of the tin mining industry and persistent problems in farming.

Similarly, women are remunerated the least well for their labour in Tameside, Greater Manchester.

On average they receive just £299.40 for a week's work.
